Fall Immune Elixir

09 05

Hey y’all!

This is the little jar I keep in the fridge once the air turns crisp and the boys start bringing home every germ from school. It’s cozy, a little spicy, and takes about ten minutes on the stove. Not a miracle potion — just a simple daily sip.

I use a good elderberry syrup as the base, then simmer fresh ginger and turmeric so it tastes warm and homey instead of medicine-cabinet. Lemon and raw honey go in off the heat so they stay bright.

Here’s exactly how I make it.

Ingredients

(makes about 2 cups — fits an 8-oz or 16-oz glass jar)

1 cup elderberry syrup

2-inch piece fresh ginger

1 teaspoon turmeric (ground is fine)

Juice of 1 lemon

¼ cup raw honey

1 cup water (for simmering)

Instructions

1. Slice the ginger it into coins (or give it a rough chop). Add the ginger, turmeric, and water to a small saucepan.

2. Bring to a gentle simmer and let it go for about 10 minutes. Your kitchen will smell like fall.

3. Strain out the ginger. Pour the warm liquid into a clean glass jar.

4. Stir in the elderberry syrup, lemon juice, and raw honey until the honey dissolves. I use a whisk.

5. Let it cool, then lid it and tuck it in the fridge.

How I take it

About 1 tablespoon a day. If someone in the house is feeling run down, I’ll do a little more.

It keeps 2–3 weeks in a clean glass jar in the fridge. I like an 8-ounce jar for a smaller batch or a 16-ounce jar so it lasts the week without thinking about it.

A few notes from my kitchen

Stir it each time — the turmeric likes to settle.

Honey is not for babies under 1.

If you’re pregnant, nursing, or on medication, check with your provider before making this a daily habit. Ginger, turmeric, and elderberry are powerful little plants.

This has become one of those Sunday rituals I actually enjoy — simmer, strain, pour, done. The boys think it tastes like spicy lemonade. I’ll take that.

Tag me if you make a batch — @sbkliving. I’d love to see your jar on the fridge door.

xo, Kasey
