My Nighttime Skincare Routine at 40 – The non-toxic products I use to keep my skin hydrated and healthy

Hey y’all!

Nighttime is when my skin does its best repair work, and at 40 I’ve gotten really intentional about protecting my skin barrier instead of challenging it. I stay away from harsh actives, strong acids, and chemicals that can strip or compromise my barrier. I’ve never used a retinoid, and I’m not looking to start. My goal is simple: keep my skin barrier strong and well hydrated so it stays calm, resilient, and healthy—especially living in a dry mountain climate.

After long days with the boys, I don’t want a complicated routine. I double cleanse to get everything off, then layer non-toxic products that focus on hydration and barrier support. Some nights I keep it minimal and only use one serum. Other nights (especially in the drier winter months) I layer on more for extra hydration. It just depends on how my skin is feeling that day.

These are the non-toxic products I actually reach for and love. Below is the step-by-step order I use them in at night.

1. Gentle Facial Cleanser

I start with a gentle, non-toxic cleanser from, Crunchi, an EWG verified non-toxic skin line. It removes the day’s sunscreen, dirt, and buildup without stripping my skin or leaving it feeling tight. A good first cleanse sets everything else up to work better, and this one feels nourishing rather than drying—exactly what my 40+ skin wants.

2. Micellar Water

Next I go over my face with micellar water on a soft cotton pad – I love this clean brand: Mustela. This is my second cleanse (the double cleanse step). I It picks up anything the first cleanser might have missed and is incredibly gentle—fragrance-free and made with soothing ingredients like organic aloe and olive oil. I love that it doesn’t require rinsing and leaves my face feeling clean but not stripped.

3. Redness Relief Serum

After cleansing, I apply a lightweight redness relief serum from Tower 28. This step calms any sensitivity or redness and helps soothe my skin so it’s ready for hydration. It’s a simple, non-toxic formula that feels gentle and supportive—especially helpful if my skin feels reactive after a long day. On nights when my skin is already calm, I sometimes skip this and move straight to hydration.

4. Hydrating Serum

Once my skin is clean and calm, I apply a hydrating serum. I’ve been loving the one from Verli. This lightweight, milky serum floods my skin with moisture. At 40, hydration is non-negotiable if I want my skin to look and feel healthy and glowy by morning. It absorbs quickly, plumps without heaviness, and creates a nice base for everything that comes next. Some nights this is the only serum I use.

5. Peptide Serum

I follow with a multi-peptide serum. I’m obsessed with option from Crunchi! It’s expensive but worth every penny. Peptides help support my skin’s natural collagen and elasticity, which becomes more important in my 40s. Layered over the hydrating serum, it feels like I’m giving my skin the tools it needs to stay firm and smooth overnight—without any harsh actives. In the drier winter months I almost always include this for extra support; other nights I may skip it if my skin feels balanced.

6. Face Oil

This is the step that seals everything in. I rotate between two oils I truly love—one is a nutrient-rich blend of seed oils that hydrates deeply and leaves a soft glow via True Botaniclas, and the other is a simple, barrier-supporting oil from Jamie Anne. A few drops pressed into my face and neck locks in the serums, supports my moisture barrier, and keeps my skin from drying out overnight. Both feel nourishing without being heavy. This step is especially important in winter when I need more occlusion.

7. Lip Mask

The final step is always a lip mask from True Botanicals. I love a nourishing one that keeps my lips soft and hydrated through the night, especially in our dry mountain climate. It’s a small ritual, but it makes a noticeable difference by morning.

That’s it. Double cleanse, soothe when needed, hydrate, seal it in, and protect my lips. All non-toxic products I actually enjoy using, focused on keeping my skin barrier strong, hydrated, and healthy while I sleep.

If you try any of these or have your own nighttime favorites, I’d love to hear them.

xo,
Kasey
