Low-Tox Living: 10 Bathroom Basics I Can’t Live Without (And Why I Made the Swap)

04 21

Hey friends, welcome back to the SBK Living!

If you’ve been following along on the low-tox journey (or just grabbed the Low-Toxic Living Guide), you already know the bathroom is one of the easiest—and most impactful—places to start swapping. It’s where we begin and end every single day, so making it feel as good as it looks has become non-negotiable in our home.

Today I’m sharing the exact 10 bathroom basics I literally cannot live without anymore. These are the simple, intentional swaps that quietly removed a ton of hidden toxins, single-use plastic, and unnecessary chemicals—without sacrificing comfort, style, or convenience.

Each one is something I use daily (or weekly) and genuinely love. I’ve linked everything I can through LTK so you can shop the exact products I have and love – see below. Ready? Let’s dive in.

1. Non-Toxic Bamboo Toilet Paper (Eco Hiny)

Why I swapped: Conventional TP is often bleached with chlorine, treated with PFAS “forever chemicals,” and wrapped in plastic.

What I love: 100% bamboo, tree-free, PFAS- & BPA-free, super soft, and comes in plastic-free packaging. My kids don’t even notice the difference, but I feel so much better knowing we’re not absorbing chemicals on our sensitive parts as well as flushing it down the toilet.

2. Bamboo Cotton Swabs (Eco Fox)

Why I swapped: Traditional cotton swabs come on plastic sticks that end up in landfills (or worse, oceans).

What I love: Biodegradable bamboo stems + organic cotton tips. They work exactly the same for makeup touch-ups, cleaning little ears, or dusting baseboards. Zero plastic, zero guilt. I use this brand.

3. Plant-Based & Plastic-Free Floss Picks (Smart Life)

Why I swapped: Most floss picks are made of virgin plastic that sits in landfills for 500+ years. I also wanted to avoid daily fluoride exposure.

What I love: Smart Life floss picks are plant-based (corn-starch derived), completely plastic-free, and fluoride-free. They glide perfectly between teeth, are easy for little hands, and biodegrade naturally. Knowing we’re not introducing extra fluoride or plastic waste makes this one of my favorite family-friendly swaps.

4. Unbleached Cotton Pads (Naked Cotton)

Why I swapped: Conventional pads are often loaded with synthetic fibers, dyes, and plastic backing.

What I love: 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton. My skin feels calmer and I’m not absorbing microplastics on my skin or flushing them down the drain.

5. Tree-Free Facial Tissue (Caboo)

Why I swapped: Most tissues are made from virgin tree pulp and come in plastic packaging.

What I love: Bamboo or sugarcane alternatives that are ultra-soft and come in recyclable or minimal packaging. Perfect for runny noses, makeup removal, or wiping little faces—same feel, way better footprint.

6. 100% Cotton Towels – no synthetics or chemical finishes (PB & Honest)

Why I swapped: Many “luxury” towels are treated with formaldehyde, softeners, and synthetic blends that can irritate sensitive skin.

What I love: Thick, plush 100% organic or Turkish cotton that gets softer with every wash. They dry quickly, look beautiful in our neutral bathroom, and I never have to worry about what’s touching our skin after a shower.

7. Epsom Salt – unscented (Sky Organics)

Why I swapped: Regular bath salts often contain synthetic fragrances and fillers.

What I love: Pure magnesium sulfate flakes. I add a couple cups to our evening baths for muscle recovery, better sleep, and gentle detox. It’s one of the simplest wellness rituals I do in the evening.

8. Glass Jars for Storage – Q-tips, cotton pads, etc. (Amazon)

Why I swapped: Plastic containers off-gas and eventually crack or stain.

What I love: Clear glass jars. They look clean and intentional on the counter, keep everything visible, and last forever. I got custom labels made on Etsy so they’re extra cute!

9. Bamboo Charcoal Toothbrush (Smart Life)

Why I swapped: Every plastic toothbrush I’ve ever used ends up in the trash after 3 months—and I definitely don’t want microplastics in my mouth (or my kids’ mouths) every single day.

What I love: Biodegradable bamboo handles with soft, charcoal-infused bristles that naturally whiten teeth while they clean. My kids think they’re “special” and I feel good knowing they’ll compost instead of living in a landfill for 400 years.

10. Fluoride-Free Toothpaste – clean, effective formula (Wellnesse)

Why I swapped: I wanted to avoid swallowing fluoride daily while still protecting our teeth.

What I love: Mineral-rich, hydroxyapatite or nano-hydroxyapatite formulas that remineralize enamel naturally. They taste great, foam nicely, and my dentist has been impressed with our family’s check-ups.

These ten swaps didn’t happen overnight—I started with toilet paper and toothbrushes years ago and slowly layered in the rest as I found products that actually felt luxurious (because low-tox doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty or comfort).

The best part? My bathroom now feels like a true sanctuary—warm, calm, and aligned with the healthy-home vibe we’re building for our boys.

If you’re just getting started, pick ONE thing from this list and make the swap this week. That’s how the magic compounds.
