Hey y’all!
If there’s one space in our home where low-tox living has made the biggest difference in how we feel every single day, it’s the bedroom. After making these intentional swaps, both Luke and I sleep better, wake up more refreshed, and our boys’ rooms feel like peaceful little retreats too.
Our bedroom isn’t just a place to crash—it’s become a true sanctuary: calm, cozy, and free from the hidden toxins that can quietly disrupt sleep and hormones. These aren’t overwhelming changes. They’re simple, beautiful upgrades that support deeper rest and that restorative feeling we all crave in our homes.
1. Natural Fiber Bedding: I upgraded to 100% natural fiber bedding—think organic cotton, linen, or wool sheets, duvets, and blankets. Synthetic fabrics can off-gas chemicals, trap heat, and harbor allergens, but natural fibers breathe beautifully, regulate temperature, wick away moisture, and are free from harsh treatments and flame retardants. My skin stays calmer, we sleep cooler and more deeply, and the whole bed feels softer and more luxurious with every wash. It’s the foundation of our calm sanctuary. I have a more detailed blog post about all of the non-toxic bedding basics I love here!
2. Red Light Bulbs: I swapped out harsh overhead lights for red light bulbs in the evening. They support natural melatonin production, reduce blue light exposure, and create the softest, most calming glow. Perfect for winding down without messing with our circadian rhythm.
3. Hot Water Bottle: On cooler mountain nights, I reach for a simple hot water bottle instead of an electric heating pad. It provides gentle, chemical-free warmth that soothes sore muscles and helps me relax into sleep without any EMFs or plastic off-gassing.
4. Silk Sleeping Mask: This blocks out every bit of light while being incredibly soft on delicate eye skin. Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating, so I fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
5. Non-Toxic Lip Mask: Overnight lip care is part of my wind-down ritual. I chose a clean, non-toxic formula free from petroleum, synthetic fragrances, and hormone disruptors. It keeps my lips soft and nourished without anything questionable absorbing through thin lip skin while I sleep.
6. Lavender Essential Oil: A few drops of pure lavender essential oil in my diffuser or on a the tip of my nose creates the most peaceful scent. It promotes relaxation, calms the nervous system, and helps signal to my body that it’s time to rest—without synthetic fragrances or harsh chemicals.
7. Magnesium Supplement: I take a high-quality magnesium at night to support muscle relaxation, calm the mind, and promote deeper sleep. It’s one of those inside-out supports that makes everything else in the bedroom routine even more effective.
8. Blue Light Blocking Glasses: I wear these in the evening if I’m on a device (phone or TV). They cut the blue light that suppresses melatonin, helping me wind down naturally instead of feeling wired when I finally go to bed. Make sure they are amber-colored for the night!
9. Red Reading Light: For those nights I want to read before bed, this little red reading light is perfect. It gives just enough soft illumination without disrupting hormones the way white or blue light does. Reading without the sleep sabotage.
10. Silk Pillowcase: Switching to a pure silk pillowcase was a game-changer for my hair and skin. Unlike cotton or synthetic fabrics, silk is gentle, breathable, and doesn’t harbor bacteria or off-gas chemicals. It keeps my skin hydrated and my hair smoother—plus it just feels luxurious.
11. Plug Phone in the Bathroom: This is one of the simplest (and most powerful) habits I’ve adopted: charging my phone in the bathroom instead of beside the bed. It eliminates nighttime EMF exposure, reduces the temptation to scroll, and creates a clear boundary between screens and sleep.
These small changes have turned our bedroom into a space that truly supports rest and recovery. It feels softer, calmer, and more aligned with the peaceful mountain life we love—while protecting our family’s health from the inside out.
If you’re just starting your low-tox journey, pick one or two from this list and build from there. The bedroom is such a high-impact area because we spend so many hours there every night.
All of my current favorites are linked below (as always, I only share what I truly use and love). And if you haven’t yet, grab the free Low-Toxic Living Guide for even more room-by-room swaps and resources.
