Low-Tox Kitchen Favorites: The Swaps That Changed Our Home

04 11

Hi there!

If there’s one area of our home that has seen the biggest shift since I started leaning deeper into low-toxic living, it’s the kitchen. What started as a few small swaps has turned into a space that feels calmer, cleaner, and honestly more joyful to cook in—especially with two little boys running around and ski days that leave us starving when we get home.

I’m not about perfection or tossing everything at once. These are the practical, family-friendly swaps that have made the biggest difference for us. They help reduce exposure to things like PFAS and microplastics while keeping meals nourishing, gluten-free options easy, and the aesthetic cozy and neutral (because pretty counters still matter!).

Here are my current Low-Tox Kitchen Favorites—the ones I actually reach for every single day.

1. Cookware: Ditching Traditional Nonstick for Safer Options

Traditional nonstick can release “forever chemicals” when scratched or heated too high, so we’ve slowly replaced ours with better alternatives.

My go-tos right now:

Stainless steel for searing and high-heat cooking—durable, heats evenly, and lasts forever. My baking sheets, pans and slow cooker are from 360 Cookware. All of their products are made in America with surgical grade stainless steel, so you know it’s non-toxic.

A good cast iron skillet for weekend pancakes or one-pan dinners (season it well and it becomes naturally nonstick). I love my 12″ pan handmade pan from Nest Homeware. It’s beautiful as I keep it on the stove 24/7 and worth every penny.

These feel like an upgrade, not a sacrifice. Food tastes better, and I have one less thing to worry about while feeding my family.

2. Food Storage: Glass Over Plastic

Goodbye plastic containers that can leach into leftovers (especially when heated). Hello glass!

I love sets with snap lids that stack neatly in the fridge or nesting bowls with wood tops. They’re dishwasher-safe, look clean on the counter, and give me peace of mind when packing Ford and West’s snacks or storing make-ahead meals.

3. Utensils & Tools: Bamboo, Wood & Stainless

Plastic spatulas and utensils can shed microplastics into hot food, so we swapped to:

Bamboo or wooden spoons, spatulas, and cutting boards (beautiful grain that fits our neutral kitchen vibe).

Stainless steel peelers, tongs, ice cream scoop and whisks—simple, long-lasting, and easy to clean.

4. Straws, Bags & Everyday Essentials

Reusable stainless steel or silicone straws (the kids actually use them!), stainless steel water bottles (I like BruMate & Simple Modern), and silicone bags. We also ditched plastic produce bags for reusable organic cotton ones. Small changes, but they add up fast.

5. Coffee & Tea Swaps (My Morning Ritual Upgrade)

Our mornings start with coffee or tea, so this became one of the swaps I was most excited about. Many traditional coffee makers and pods have plastic parts that can leach microplastics into hot liquid, and bleached filters can contain hidden chemicals.

Here’s what we switched to:

A stainless steel French press or espresso maker — it’s what I use almost every day now.

For tea, I love to use my stainless steel kettle for my Pique tea or for loose-leaf a small glass teapot with strainer — no plastic tea bags.

Why it matters to me: That first quiet cup in our sunlit kitchen sets the tone for the whole day. I want it to feel nourishing instead of adding to the toxin load. These swaps give me cleaner, better-tasting coffee or tea with zero plastic contact, and they still look beautiful on the counter — fitting right into our neutral, cozy vibe.

6. Kids’ Low-Tox Kitchen Swaps (Plates, Bowls, Cups & Flatware)

With two little boys who are constantly dropping, throwing, or banging dishes, we needed something durable and safer than plastic. Plastic kids’ dishes can contain BPA, phthalates, and other endocrine disruptors — especially when they get scratched or go in the dishwasher.

Our favorite swaps:

Stainless steel plates, bowls & cups— they’re virtually indestructible, easy to clean, and don’t harbor bacteria like plastic can.

Stainless steel flatware sized for little hands — no more mystery plastic bits ending up in their food.

These have been a game-changer for peace of mind. Ford and West can be rough on them during meals, and I don’t have to worry about chemicals leaching into their food. Plus, they still look clean and nice on our table.

Why These Swaps Matter (Without the Overwhelm)

We’re not aiming for a sterile kitchen—just one that supports our energy and the boys’ growing bodies while we enjoy mountain life. The more I learn about PFAS in older nonstick and microplastics in plastics, the more grateful I am for these gentle shifts. Start with one category (maybe storage or utensils) and build from there—that’s exactly how we did it.

These changes have made cooking feel more intentional and less stressful. I reach for my pans with confidence, the counters stay organized and pretty, and I love knowing we’re nourishing our family with fewer hidden toxins.
