What Non-Toxic Products I Use to Clean My Home (and Why They Actually Work)

Howdy!

Spring cleaning season is in full swing here in Sun Valley, and I’ve been getting so many questions about what we actually use to keep our home clean without all the harsh chemicals. If you’re a busy mom who wants a fresh, healthy home but doesn’t want to spend hours researching every bottle, this one’s for you.

I used to grab whatever was on sale at Target. Now, after learning more about what’s in conventional cleaners (and how they can affect our kids and our own energy), I’ve made some gentle swaps that actually feel better — for our family and for the air we breathe every day.

Here are the non-toxic cleaning products and tools I reach for most in our home right now, plus why I love them.

1. Branch Basics – My All-Purpose Cleaner Hero

Branch Basics is my ride-or-die for almost everything. I use their Concentrate to make an all-purpose spray that handles counters, tables, bathrooms, windows and more. It’s truly non-toxic, plant-based, and doesn’t leave behind any weird residue or fragrance.

Why I love it: I can make my own using my glass spray bottles, it’s safe enough for the boys to be around while I clean, and it doesn’t make me cough or get a headache like my old cleaners did. The concentrate lasts forever!

2. Koala Eco & L’AVANT – For the Pretty Scents + Powerful Jobs

When I want something with a light, natural scent (but still truly clean), I reach for Koala Eco or L’AVANT multi-purpose cleaner. Both are made with essential oils and plant-based ingredients, and they cut through grease and grime without any synthetic fragrances.

I use Koala Eco and L’AVANT in the kitchen and bathrooms. They smell fresh (think eucalyptus or citrus) without being overpowering — exactly the kind of subtle scent that fits our neutral, cozy home.

3. White Vinegar – The Unsung Hero

I keep a big jug of plain white vinegar on hand at all times. Mixed with water, it’s my go-to for windows, wood floors, toilet and shower/bath tubs.

Why it matters: It’s cheap, extremely effective, and kills bacteria without any toxins. I use it so much that I now have a cute spray bottle labeled just for vinegar so it doesn’t look messy on the counter.

4. Dirty Labs Laundry Detergent

For laundry, we switched to Dirty Labs. It’s bio-based, free of harsh chemicals, and works incredibly well on our performance fabrics, kids’ clothes, and all the hiking/ski gear that comes through the door.

Paired with wool dryer balls, I’ve ditched dryer sheets completely. The wool balls reduce static, soften clothes naturally, and cut drying time — which means less energy use too.

5. Natural Cleaning Tools I Actually Love

I’ve replaced synthetic sponges with:

Coconut sponges and natural scrubbers (they clean well and biodegrade)

Cotton towels and cloths for dusting and wiping surfaces (I keep a basket of them in the laundry room)

Non-toxic paper towels — my new favorite find! I switched to tree-free or recycled, unbleached rolls that break down better and don’t have the harsh chemicals found in conventional ones. They’re strong enough for big messes but feel so much gentler on our home.

These tools feel nicer in my hands and don’t leave behind little plastic micro-particles the way traditional sponges can.

Why These Swaps Feel So Good

Switching to non-toxic cleaners hasn’t made cleaning take longer — it’s actually made it more pleasant. Our home smells fresh and clean without that artificial “clean” scent. I don’t worry when the boys crawl on the floors or touch the counters right after I wipe them. And honestly? I feel lighter knowing we’re reducing the chemical load in the space where we spend so much time together.

These products are all effective, beautiful enough to leave out, and gentle enough for our family’s real life.

If you’re just getting started, I always recommend beginning with one swap (maybe swapping your all-purpose cleaner or your dryer sheets). Small changes really do add up.

Have you tried any of these brands yet? Which non-toxic cleaning product has been your biggest game-changer? Drop it in the comments — I love hearing what’s working for your families!

With love from our fresh-smelling mountain home, Kasey ✨
