Non-Toxic Activewear: Why I Made the Swap (And the Brands I’m Loving Right Now)

Hey there!

You know how we talk about low-tox living in every corner of our homes — from the cleaners we spray to the sheets we sleep on? Well, I finally took a hard look at what I was wearing while I moved. Sweating. Stretching. Chasing the kids around the yard. Turns out, most conventional activewear is loaded with things we’re actively trying to avoid: PFAS (those forever chemicals), synthetic dyes, BPA, phthalates… all of it sitting right against our skin (our body’s largest organ) and getting absorbed even faster when we sweat.

I decided it was time for an intentional swap. Not because I wanted to be perfect, but because I want to feel as good as my home looks — and because I want the same for you and your family. Non-toxic activewear isn’t about giving up comfort or style. It’s about choosing pieces that support your wellness rituals instead of working against them.

Here are the four brands I’ve tried and like. All of them focus on cleaner materials, better ethics, and that soft, lived-in feel I crave in my everyday wardrobe.

MATE the Label (MOVE by MATE collection): This is my everyday uniform. Their activewear is made with 92% organic cotton and just a touch of spandex for stretch — no harsh chemicals, no PFAS, no toxic dyes. The leggings, sports bras, and shorts are incredibly soft, breathable, and hold up beautifully to washing (and toddler handprints). I love that it feels elevated enough for school drop-off but cozy enough for morning movement. If you’re new to the non-toxic swap, start here — it’s the easiest “feels like butter” transition.

Pact: Affordable, ethical, and GOTS-certified organic cotton everything. Pact was one of the first brands that made me realize clean basics could actually be cute and budget-friendly. Their leggings, skorts, and tees are super soft, fair-trade made, and completely free of the toxins we don’t want near our skin. I stock up on their neutral staples because they mix seamlessly with everything else in my closet and wash like a dream. Perfect for busy moms who want one less thing to worry about.

Definite Articles: The performance player in my rotation. If you love the stretch and moisture control of traditional synthetics but want them actually clean, this is your brand. Every garment is independently tested and verified free of BPA, PFAS, and 50+ other harmful substances. They use innovative CiCLO® technology so the fabrics are more biodegradable without sacrificing function. I wear their leggings and shorts for higher-intensity movement and feel zero guilt (or irritation) afterward.

Layere: This newer favorite brings that premium, buttery-soft organic cotton feel with a clean aesthetic that fits right into our neutral, intentional lifestyle. Built on 100% or 95% organic cotton (with minimal spandex where needed), no polyester, and zero toxic finishes. Their leggings, sports bras, zip jackets, and sets are breathable, flattering, and made for everyday movement — from studio sessions to school drop-off. I love how thoughtful the brand is about clean materials and quality that lasts.

Making the swap doesn’t have to happen overnight. Start with one pair of leggings or a sports bra that replaces your most-worn piece. Your body (and the planet) will thank you.

What about you? Have you made the switch to non-toxic activewear yet? Drop your favorite brand or piece in the comments — I’m always looking for new recs to share with the community.

Here’s to feeling as good as we look, Kasey
