Supplement Details

This post has been a long time coming. I share frequently on my Instagram stories about supplements I take. I wanted to break it down for y’all here on SBKliving.com! I’m sharing what I did during pregnancy and postpartum. Essentially this has been my routine the past 2+ years and currently as I’ve had two babies back-to-back. Below I’m listing each supplement and why I take it.

When do I take them? The majority of these supplements I put into one drink in the morning: Athletic Greens, iodine, vitamin d drops, pumpkin seed oil, beta glucan and ground up placenta (postpartum). I mix it all together and gulp it down! My multivitamin and omega plus pills I typically take when I eat my first meal. Lastly I have magnesium at night before going to bed.

Please note, I am not a medical professional. After years of educating myself, these are what work best for my body. A few resources I’ve found very helpful are: Dr. Rhonda Patrick Found My Fitness & Ben Greenfield Fitness. Leave a comment if you have any questions!

Supplements I take and why…

[1] Athletic Greens – I am a huge fan of this daily green supplement. I have been taking it for about 3 years. It is made with 75 vitamins, minerals and whole food source ingredients. The 5 main benefits are: [1] digestion, gut health and liver support, [2] nervous system and immune system support, [3] efficient energy production and storage, [4] antioxidants and superfoods to support healthy aging and [5] hormone, neural and adaptogen support. The good news is, it doesn’t taste bad either! It is pretty pricey however, I think it’s SO worth it. Especially when it comes to you health.

[2] Iodine – It is essential for the production of maternal and fetal thyroid hormones that regulate the development of the fetal brain and nervous system during pregnancy and after birth. I add it to my green drink every morning.

[3] Vitamin D Drops – Most of us are deficient in vitamin D and need to supplement as we don’t get it from the sun. I know I am as I live in a colder weather climate. I had mine checked during pregnancy with a blood test and it came back low. The key benefits of vitamin D are: immune support, bone health and heart & muscle health. It’s important for pregnant and breast feeding women to take vitamin D as it helps your baby’s bones, teeth, kidneys, heart and nervous system to develop.

[4] Beta Glucan – This is a great source of fiber, specifically soluble dietary fiber, that’s strongly linked to improving cholesterol levels and boosting heart health. It also helps with constipation and bowel issues as well as maintaining healthy gut bacteria.

[5] Multivitamin – Prenatal/Postnatal – I’ve taken Ritual vitamins for over a year. I started with the multivitamin and loved them. They help to fill the gaps in my diet, don’t hurt my stomach and are made with NO shady fillers, colorants or additives. You can even trace where all of their ingredients come from! When I was pregnant I took the prenatal and I just started with the postnatal after having West. Their postnatal multi is formulated for the to support the new nutrient demands on a mother and through lactation! If you want to try them out, I have a 10% off code your first 3 months!! [6] Omega Plus – This supplement combines omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA) from cold-water fish with an omega-6 fatty acid – GLA from borage oil. It supports heart, brain, skin, respiration, and bone health. During pregnancy and postpartum omegas are important for baby’s brain! I stopped taking omegas during the end of my pregnancy as it thins the blood. After birth I began to take is at about 3 weeks postpartum; when I was done bleeding.

[7] Magnesium – Mag is an essential mineral that regulates various bodily functions. Magnesium relaxes muscles, maintains healthy blood sugar levels, helps build strong teeth and bones, and regulates cholesterol and heartbeat. Great for growing baby! In the last few month of pregnancy, I did not take Magnesium as it interferes with uterine contractions. Once I had West, I started it again! It’s helpful in aiding your digestions and going to the bathroom. Very important!!
