5 Easy Things I Do To Create a Healthy, Non-Toxic Home

Hey there! In my first post of the year I broke down WHY I’m creating a healthy, non-toxic home. If you missed it, check it out here. Today I’m sharing 5 easy things I do to ensure a healthy home free of toxic endocrine (hormone) disruptors, carcinogens and allergens. These are simple and effective!

Note: I am not a health expert or a doctor. After spending countless hours researching, listening to podcasts, reading articles and talking to experts, this is what I’ve decided to do in my home. Do what feels right for you.

Below I explain each swap I’ve made. This will be the best investment you make for you and your family all year!

[1] Non-toxic Cleaning Products – This was number one on my list to swap out once I started to learn how I could create a less toxic home for my family. Especially with having littles crawling on the floors, putting everything in their mouths and breathing the air. Standard products on the market are a big endocrine disruptor in the home. This was an easy switch! There are two brands on the market that I like: Branch Basics and Rosey. It’s ALL I use and they are very effective.

[2] Air Filters – It was important to make sure the air my family is breathing is as clean as possible and free of allergens. I do this by placing air purifiers throughout my home – in all of the bedrooms and main living area. This is my favorite option: LEVOIT. I purchased these years ago and replace the filters as needed.

[3] Non-toxic Scents (candles & diffusers) – This is a new rabbit hole I went down this past year. To think many candles are NOT safe/clean?? When burned they can release allergens into the air along with cancer-causing chemicals. But not to worry, there are safe candles on the market along with using a good ole diffuser. When purchasing candles I now look for a 100% cotton wick, all natural fragrance and bees wax. I just ordered some new ones from Nette. Next to my bed I have my diffuser and add my own essential oils. I love to turn it on in the evening filled with eucalyptus or lavender. This is my favorite one.

[4] Humidifiers – I have one in every single bedroom. Not only do humidifiers help alleviate cold symptoms, but it’s also great for the skin. Having the added moisture in the air is an extra bonus and will improve sleep too! Canopy is by far the best on the market. It’s mold inhibiting and easy to pop in the dishwasher to clean. I have a subscription so the new filters show up on my door step each month – so easy!

[5] No Plastics – Using less plastic in general is something I’ve been aware for along time because of the impact on the environment. BUT it can really effect the health of humans and cause cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. I found this article to be very informative. An easy switch I’ve done in the kitchen is swapping out ALL plastics. Now I use silicone bags (great for kiddos lunches), glass containers, ceramic baskets for fruits and veggies and reclaimed BPA free trash bags.
