Non-toxic Cookware Favorites

Here we go with another healthy living post. I cook 95% of my families food and finding safe cookware is very important to me. I’ve tried numerous brands/items, watched videos about chemicals in our cookware and spent hours reading articles. Now that I better understand what is actually safe, I wanted to share my favorite non-toxic cookware with y’all. Please note, these are the products I love and deem safe for me and my family from my research.

First things first, my current motto with living a healthy life is, KEEP IT SIMPLE! I feel like our society has overcomplicated literally everything. The fact we even have to second guess and worry about what toxins are in a baking pan is frightening. BUT here we are, and it’s so important to be our own advocates when it comes to health and wellness.

The majority of the time I cook in a cast iron skillet – these are my two favorites: Utopia & Nest Homeware. I committed to it last year and it has been an easy transition. I even cook eggs on it! Once you get down how to clean and season your cast iron, it’s great. I’ll do a post about this soon.

When it comes to bakeware, I’ve struggled a bit more to find good options. There are a few nonstick non-toxic brands that are safe – free of PFAS. My favorite is Caraway. I’ve used their products for years and feel like they hold up the best. I now use their muffin tin and baking sheet.

In the past few months I’ve come across a few materials that are unfortunately toxic when heated; silicone and parchment paper. This is such a bummer! Our government states it is safe up to 500 degrees however there are studies out showing at just 200 degrees silicone releases toxic chemicals (siloxanes) into the food and air. Check out this video from Non Toxic Dad. This goes for all bakeware AND spatulas.

I no longer use my silicone bakeware in the oven and spatulas on the range. Rather I use my molds to make frozen/room temp foods and spatulas for mixing. A great alternative to silicone utensils are wood. I invested in an olive wood set and it was SO worth it!

This also made me second guess my silicone bags, toddler plates, utensils and snack cups I have for the kids. My thought was to eliminate as much plastic as possible and I’m happy to report these are safe if unheated. I make sure to always hand wash these good – no dishwasher!

When it comes to parchment paper, I now use it if I’m making something that goes in the freezer or fridge. No more heating it up in the oven as it releases chemicals.

Essentially if you decide to use non-toxic cookware, you’ll need to invest a little bit more energy and cleaning time. It’s definitely worth it for me and my family!

Linking my favorite non-toxic cookware below and answering a few basic questions…

What materials are safe?

Stainless steel, glass, cast iron, stoneware, non-toxic ceramic (i.e. Caraway),

What chemicals are toxic?

PFAS – class of over 12,000 man made chemicals. They are known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment and can collect in human blood and organs. PFAS are usually found in nonstick – i.e. Teflon. If you want to take a deeper dive, I found this article very informative.

Does temperature matter?

YES! As I mentioned above, I am no longer using Silicone for this reason. I suggest looking at the temperature restrictions for each item you are using to ensure you are not overheating the material.

How to clean and care for your cookware?

It’s important to understand what material you are working with. For example and cast iron should be cleaned a certain way so it doesn’t rust. Once you take the time upfront, it’s very simple.

  1. Great post! I had researched the muffin molds when you first posted your egg bites and was skeptical of using them. What are your thoughts on enameled cast iron? You know, the other french brand? 😉
